Advocates of the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) want America to reduce its nuclear capabilities in exchange for Russia ‘s word that it will do likewise. Does this make sense?

Russia, throughout its history, has been an authoritarian if not a totalitarian state hell bent on expanding its empire. During much of 20th century, Russia sought explicitly to destroy the United States and enslave its allies. Despite some liberalization following the collapse of the Berlin wall, the authoritarian nature of Russian society can still be seen today. The state is assassinating journalists, bullying neighboring nations, jailing businessmen, and so on. Corruption is rampant. Statism—the subjugation of the individual to the state—is the guiding spirit in all of Russia ‘s history.

The United States, throughout its history, has been a relatively rights respecting nation that has never sought an empire. The U.S, with few but significant exceptions, has given its moral support for many nations seeking freedom and has treated other rights respecting nations with respect. The United States was founded on the individual’s right to his life, liberty, property, and pursuit of happiness. Freedom is the guiding spirit in all of America’s history.

Why then are some Americans, Democrats and Republicans included, advocating weakening the military might of the United States for Russia?

The answer is simple: the new START advocates seek to weaken the United States. There can be no doubt on what such a treaty accomplishes. Even if a misguided few does in fact believe that this treaty will increase U.S security, what are the means by which they seek to do it? By appeasement. By reducing the capabilities of the United States to defend itself. Does anyone actually think that a weaker and less capable United States will better American security and discourage belligerent states like Iran and North Korea from pursuing nuclear weapons?

If you answer no, then it should be clear what the advocates of START are seeking. The advocates of START seek to diminish U.S power for the sake of diminishing U.S power.

If America truly wants security, the proper course would be to embrace its military might and confidently face down all hostile regimes that threaten its security. If anything, the United States should increase its military capabilities and make START mean the Strategic American Rearmament Treaty.

None of these eight reforms rub hard on ideological wounds. They can all be pursued without touching existing entitlement systems and legacy welfare provision. They would amount to the first major steps toward creating parallel systems of experimentation, all within the framework of the existing system. It seems like they should earn bipartisan support.

Congress Must Cut and Reform Medicaid

Because of Medicaid’s matching grant system, states have no incentive to cut wasteful or fraudulent Medicaid outlays and every incentive to increase both.
